Hi! I’m looking to collate/list community-funded Fediverse ISPs with multiple services. Some aggregate of servers that offer multiple services, not necessarily just Fediverse related, but at least one Fediverse service.
As examples, I can list:
I know there’s one out there that also provides email (can’t recall which), which is interesting as most people wouldn’t dare.
- lemmy.wtf provides peertube.wtf and piefed.dk too.
- lemmy.world is hosted by https://fedihosting.foundation/ , together with other .world instances and several stux’ fediverse instances, like mstdn.social and gram.social
- https://dotzip.ltd/
- infosec.exchange has got many sister services, listed here
- https://devol.it/ hosts largest Italian fediverse instances
- https://fediverse.neat.pub/
- Framasoft made Mobilizon (and hosta its main French instance), makes PeerTube and hosta e.g. Framapiaf (a Mastodon instance) and more
- many such providers in France are members of CHATONS
- from Poland, there is wspanialy.eu, with Mastodon, FreshRSS, and recently also Matrix and WriteFreely
this obviously is not exhaustive
community-funded
Community underfunded. What the community is giving out barely covers the cost of the hardware, much less the labor of the admins.
Last year I considered offering accounts via a Caffe Sospeso on Communick, but it quickly became clear that is was going to suffer from the tragedy of the commons. Everyone that was willing to bear the actual operating costs would prefer to run their own servers to serve themselves, and the ones that were asking for “community supported” accounts were overwhelming just interested in free-riding.
There are people willing to donate their time* so only funding the hardware and other unavoidable running costs is often fine. If you find it too much workload, try looking for other volunteers.
*because contrary of what some economist think, it is often more enjoyable to work on something that isn’t paid, then to use the same time to work for money and pay for the service. You see the same effect with the people that prefer selfhosting as you say.
We had this discussion before. People that want to treat this as a hobby can by all means go for it. But hobbyists alone will never be able to build and maintain something that can become a real alternative to all the shitty dominant economic systems out there.
You are making a category error.
Home cooking is a thing, and it is the predominant way of feeding yourself and also some lazy freeloaders aka your kids.
Or to make a different analogy: you are trying to compete as a restaurant with people wanting to organize a barbeque with their friends. That’s never going to work.
you are trying to compete as a restaurant with people wanting to organize a barbeque with their friends.
Yes and no. I don’t want to compete with the community. I was just expecting the community to have bigger ambitions that having a barbeque with their friends, and consider organizing itself to bring down Kraft Foods.
As long as you live in a capitalist state, the most success you can hope for is to become the next Kraft Foods with all the same issues (and very likely the same stock owners soon after).
The only winning move is to not play their game.
Two things:
-
Something something “Capitalism is the worst economic system, except for everything else that has been tried”.
-
Most if not all revolutions in human history only occurred when the “power-adjacent” class sided with the ruled populace and actively fought the rulers. For us (the comfortable middle class) to shrug and “Not play the Game” is quite lame.
No, the best economic system is still communism, such as it was practiced in the Commune de Paris. Of course a quote from the openly racist and imperialist Winston Churchill can only be used to excuse capitalism.
I think they said not play their game. Not: not play the[any] game.

Oh the community does have bigger ambitions than having a barbeque with their friends.
But there’s a pyramids of need there to tackle beforehand. If we can’t even get the barbeque with friends, we can’t support the entire jump to Discount Krusty either.

That’s a mathematical (and behavioural) indicative that your offering was simply not good enough for the target audience. If the people willing to put in the money and time were preferring to do it on their own for that same sum, it means you don’t have enough aggregated value or distinctive non-operational functionality (“perks” or “affiliations”, basically) to be unloading that value of cost on your potential users.
Reminder: we are in an era where our kind of people (focused on privacy, sovereignty, etc) know better than to commit to future payment for stuff because when you start paying for stuff, it gets Enshittified; an upstart in the current landscape is alas much more vulnerable to that.
If the people willing to put in the money and time were preferring to do it on their own for that same sum.
Different groups of people. My (few) customers pay to have peace of mind and have a service that works for them. The self-hosters were people who seemed enthusiastic about a “cafe sospeso” system, but indicated no interest in letting unknown people into their servers nor in contributing to strangers.
I know there’s one out there that also provides email (can’t recall which), which is interesting as most people wouldn’t dare.
You probably mean https://disroot.org/
This is really cool. I might switch over for email.
