I’m surprised that this wasn’t already the case. Model files are massive and torrents (the technology) are a good way to get those files around. It also provides another way to verify which models are popular based on the number of seeders, instead of relying solely on what each website claims is popular.
“each website” being huggingface and modelscope. The hosting of these files is being subsidized by those two entities. HF was just bought by Nvidia. It’s just a matter of time before they try to squeeze out a return. Not sure who is funding modelscope. Anyway, this site popping up is somewhat of a reaction to this.

Also use their power to squash models they don’t approve of, like open source ones, or uncensored/abliterated ones.
I feel like the biggest issue is the way they include all files for each model in a single torrent. Realistically I think most of the time people are going to want to download a single quantization (like Q4 which is like the 1080p sweet spot for most models), not all of them, and I think most of the time torrents are going to end up in that horrible partial-seeding state where most sources only seed a few of the files.
Is that worse than splitting everything individually and having most of them be dead?
Once people start cherry-picking individual files out of a combined torrent, and nobody’s downloading and seeding the other files they don’t want, those files are still dead anyway. They just don’t look dead until you try to actually download them and it turns out that none of the other people on the torrent have them.
And the way I see it, part of the appeal is that unpopular, unwanted choices will be dead, allowing us to focus on sharing and seeding the ones that actually matter to people. It’s not like the original source files are going away, for now anyway. This is just democratizing the distribution of them, in case someday they do. It’s not likely ever going to be a full archival, it’s a backstop to protect the ones that actually matter in case the source does go away.
Have to make sure that the unreleased models inside Anthropic, OpenAI and so forth know about this.
