After hosting RetroLemmy.com for close to 3 years, we are proud to announce we now have also opened up a PieFed instance called Retrofed.
This is not meant to replace RetroLemmy, but instead give retro-minded people a choice.
Also, Retrofed is available and fully functional on http as well as https. Meaning old hardware should be able to connect and interact with retrofed if people so wish.
Your home away from modern life.
Welcome to the nostalgia-filled piefed instance of yesteryear.
Open Registration with Application questionnaire.
Very nice - welcome to the Threadiverse new- / old-comer!
Happy to be here!
Since you have an application, you should tell people what kinds of people you’re looking for (and also what kinds of people you’re trying to weed out).
As a guy pushing 50 who started gaming with Pong and used computers most Internet users have never heard of, I’d say this is aimed at me. I also use the second-newest iPhone, and a Mac and a MacBook from this decade. I do/did love the classic Macs, as well as the Amiga 1000, but I’m realistically not going to use a computer that old for any amount of time in 2026.
Also, a lot of Lemmy (/Piefed? /the Fediverse?) is regional and/or political (left-leaning to far left in my experience), you might also note that if people are allowed or disallowed from certain countries (notably US, Israel, Palestine, Iran, China, Russia) or if any political ideologies are allowed, disallowed, encouraged, or discouraged. I also see a few instances taking positions on things like AI, piracy, and porn (you have covered the latter one).
Or is it more of a free-for-all as long as you love some kind of retro tech?
I’m intrigued, but a bit confused, too.
Everyone is welcome. Basically the instance allows all spectrum, as long as you behave and treat people with respect. Local communities allowed must be at least retro adjacent. Meaning it has to be old shit somehow, whether in spirit or physically.
For example. On retrolemmy we have communities for pixel art and adventure/point n click games. Both are being made today, but in spirit live in the days before.

So you mean for example Life is Strange being an adventure game is “retro adjacent” to point and click games like the old LucasArts games from the 80s? I can dig that. And I play some of those. (There’s even Thimbleweed Park which uses the same engine, has voice acting, and even has a bunch of characters from the LucasArts games in it.) Or like how Noita is a pixel-art rogue-lite that almost looks like a game from the 80s until you realise the computer is simulating every pixel with a full physics/chemistry engine?
You’ve got the idea. Retro, or retro inspired. Our piefed doesn’t have any retro communities as of writing this, but our lemmy has retro magazines, antique radios, adventure games, pixel art, ms-Dos and more. Not everything is retro, but the things that aren’t are retro inspired.
The instance itself is fully compatible and federated with the entire threadiverse, so only the local feed will be 100% retro/retro-inspired. Also we’re working on retro feeds for easy access to topics of interest.
I was meaning to look into Piefed anyway, and last time I looked, I didn’t see any Piefed instances that spoke to me and I didn’t wanna hop on the main one. I like what the two of you are saying.
we aren’t strict on our applications, mostly just trying to filter out bots
