Users will be notified when they are included in a Pack.

Now I have to manually opt-out every time someone wants to share my handle with new users?

I wish it was the other way round.

Packs will become an extension of discovery. Users who wish to opt out entirely from Packs will be able to do so by disabling the existing setting, labelled “Feature profile and posts in discovery algorithms”. This will signal that an account cannot be added to a Pack.

Which is written out quite clearly before they bring up the point that you will be notified when you are included in a pack. I wish people would read a bit more before voicing their complaints.

i do wish they would create a separate option for preventing being added to starter packs rather than just disabling all discovery though

They’re still working on it conceptually - send them an email about it as they suggest! :)

Yep, that’s what I said. They don’t get created very often and most people won’t find themselves in a pack unless they specifically ask.

The follow notifications are much noisier since it’s so easy to follow everyone in a pack.

Not that it matters anyway, you can opt out of the feature entirely.

I furthermore doubt they’ll create a notification that cannot be disabled. You have pretty good control over that stuff in Mastodon.
