Linux is going to shit when this man dies. He has such a stringent quality requirement that he’s quite possibly the only reason Linux is the behemoth king that it is today. Humans are lazy, unqualified, and the fact that this man tells it like it is so often, and so brashly is why I will continue to use Linux; because I can trust that this guy keeps all the garbage out.
there’s an entire team at the top. if linus dies suddenly, greg kroah-hartman or one of the other “generals” will probably take over as bdfl
His brash demeanor is also what keeps it from being better, and causes devs to leave. I know I would never spend my time to contribute to such a toxic environment…
I know another good reason why you should never contribute… 🙄
Like this crazy and pointless make_u32_from_two_u16() ‘helper’. That thing makes the world actively a worse place to live.
I love how enthusiastic he is about
make_u32_from_two_u16()
It really is kinda hard to justify wrapping
a << 16 | b
in a function.Yep, these kind of wrapper functions actually hurt kernel readability and add unecessary call overhead - in critical kernel paths every instruction counts.
Especially given that one actually tells you where the values get placed.
Say what you want about Linus’s style of leadership and communication, but seen from a code quality standpoint he is absolutely correct. The implementation detail he is complaining about is atrocious.
Your ‘garbage’ RISC-V patches are ‘making the world worse’
I’d personally fucking laugh out loud if I hear that myself from Linus. 0 personal attack and 100% hillarious.
