.ml has a reputation of hosting lots of tankies, which is why some people have the whole instance banned, I chose sopuli because low ping

I remember the reason why I didn’t chose Sopuli, it was one of the top contenders BTW. At that time I had no idea if that instance is good or bad, and searching in the web for the reputation of an instance wasn’t much fruitful. The reason why Sopuli fall out of the contender list was, …

      1. it is run by a Finn (nothing against a Finn!!! don’t get this twisted!). Why could that be a problem, maybe in the future? It could be too opinionated towards a single persons or country, not as neutral as I hope it would be. Because it specifically mentions Finn and their rules also in their language, I would think it could be a political reason and a strong focus. I would avoid the same, if it was run by any other country and mentioned it like this! In example I’m in Germany and would avoid German instances too, especially if it was written like the Sopuli style on their description.
      2. it lists Bitcoin and other cryptocurrency on their main page description, alongside with Patreon. While its not a problem trying to cover the costs of the instance, I am always a bit allergic if cryptocurrency is put in front and center. Yes, normal people do that too, but it always feels a bit off putting to me.

My goal was to find the biggest and neutral possible instance, with a description and rule set that sounded good enough, and is not blocked by many. I don’t know if ml instance was the best choice, and I don’t know if Sopuli would be better. But I had to make a choice and tried to do a safe bet, as the ml instance description sounded minimalist and focuses on Open Source and is run by their developers.

for trying to find as neutral as possible instance I don’t think lemmy.ml was a particularly successful choice. Pretty sure even the choice of the .ml TLD is a reference to Marxism-Leninism.

Maybe it is. But I’ll stick for now, because I don’t see any problem. That does not mean there aren’t any, I’m just not convinced.

I noticed that a few instances are banned. I actually wanted to avoid that, unless the instances are bad or extreme. I don’t know what tankies mean btw. But I’m probably not switching that soon away, unless it gets bad.

Tankies do not “praise Putin,” they consider Putin to be a reactionary nationalist. Tankies don’t think Putin is some Hitler-level monster trying to take over all of Europe, though, so whenever imperialist countries warmonger with respect to Russia, tankies generally push back on the propaganda.

Tankies do praise China, because China is socialist. Socialists tend to like socialism in practice.

What do you mean by warmonger? Russia has always been interested in gaining land and is invading Ukraine for basically no other reason other than them not wanting to be a 2nd belarus? I speak ESL so maybe I just don’t understand

I am specifically referring to imperialist countries encircling Russia, propagandizing against it, provoking it, and portraying it as a country of mindless barbarians (as you are doing here). The Russian empire ended when the Soviets freed the Tsar’s colonies, at which point Ukraine was and has been free. The modern conflict between Ukraine and Russia is not because Russians are just a warmongering people like you claim, but instead a result of continued encirclement and hostile forces encroaching closer and closer to Moscow over the last few decades.

So you are saying that Russia didn’t do anything wrong by invading a country that just didn’t want to qlly with them?

I don’t view the world in terms of “right” and “wrong,” because that’s a moralistic view that clouds our judgement. I view it in terms of class interest, and take the side of the international working class. The conflict is between western imperialists with the Ukrainian capitalist class against Russian nationalists, with the Ukrainian working class being the biggest victim. What’s best is a swift peaceful resolution.

But is china really that socialist they have private property and companies isn’t that kinda like saying north korea is democratic because it says democratic in its name and why would a socialist country build a firewall for the internet and roll tanks out in a peaceful protest and more recently shutdown a peacuful protest in hong kong.

China is socialist because social ownership is the principal aspect of the economy, and the working classes control the state. It has nothing to do with the name of China, and everything to do with how their society is actually structured, same with the DPRK’s form of consensus-based democracy. I don’t know why you are pretending I made the claim that China is socialist because they said so, I have never made that claim in my life.

The reason for the firewall is to protect developing Chinese internet infrastructure from competition with more developed western alternatives like Facebook. It’s the same reason the US bans Chinese EVs to protect its own auto industry. Thanks to the firewall, China has a much more mature internet than they would have otherwise. This is standard protectionism.

As for the June 4th incident, it wasn’t at all peaceful. Rioters around Beijing began lynching unarmed members of the PLA, which prompted state intervention. As for Hong Kong, it was more peaceful than June 4th, but also was countered more peacefully. In both cases, capitalists opposed the socialist system and sparked unrest.

Tankie is just a pejorative for those who support socialist states, as I have said elsewhere. Do you actually disagree with anything I have said on the basis of fact, or are you just jumping to a pejorative to dodge having to respond? Honest question.

And Putin a reactionary nationalist? What is he reacting to? That countries which don’t want to be under Russia’s thumb tend to ally with the west?

Reactionary meaning socially and fiscally regressive. The imperialist countries encircling Russia are also reactionary, though, so the source of conflict is imperialist encirclement vs. Russian nationalism resisting that encroachment.

I think you read and fantasize too much into. Not everyone sees it through those eyes. In example, because I like a certain character from a videogame (or even film) does not mean I like everything the person likes. In example I like the character Di Caprio played. It does not mean I’m racist.
