Is Signal invaded by mercan spies? Is this request just an attempt by the CIA, FBI and NSA to get anarchists to self identify?
I think Signal is still pretty ok. This is not a great argument in its favor, but I personally know several US contractors and govt employees that still use it for coordination, and they wouldn’t use it if they thought it was compromised (even by the US govt). A backdoor for one group means a backdoor for everyone.
Maybe, but you need to give it your mobile phone number, which makes it easy to get your real identity and even track your location.
FYI you can hide your phone number from other Signal users.

The reason it’s on signal is because a lot of the people that use it aren’t on lemmy at all. They come from mastodon and raddle and places like that. Also we usually discuss the texts over a voice call instead of just on a forum
To my understanding the backdoor was opened in 2021.
