I am not happy about the amount of fedjacketing in this thread. Instead of calling users cops (as a joke), try better and provide information why joining Signal groups from anonymous users might involve some risk.
If you already have the group in Signal, using its encrypted voice chat makes sense.
but op is asking us to register to theirs, without mentioning in the OP it’s a voicechat discussion group. the op would be much different than what we are seeing being phished.

With Signal one has to share their phone number. Please don’t share your phone number with random people you meet online.
That is not entirely correct. It could happen that you share your phone number unintentionally and its good to make people aware of that possibility, but Signal allows you to join groups without revealing your phone number.

Just a reminder that Signal is not 100% open source since 2021. This means that we can no longer verify if what they say about privacy, security, etc, is true.

Please reconsider. You can join a group like that without giving away your phone number to a person you don’t know, asking for it online. See relevant comment in this comment section.
I haven’t given my phone number out to anyone in the groups I’m in. They sent a group link.
I got some from Lemmy and some from Mastodon.

They may see it if you have the privacy settings set to enable them to see your number. If you have the privacy settings set to hide your number, they will not see it.
It looks like this is a new (to me) feature I was not aware of and this is why I deleted the comment you replied to.
Since I consider this super important I would like to ask Smookey4444@anarchist.nexus to change the post description and ask for those who want to participate to follow the necessary steps as indicated by Signal (see here), before joining this group. Otherwise, it’s a problematic situation on so many levels imo.

Movim could be a good alternative. It supports group chats and group voice/video calls, and uses XMPP on the backend.

I think Signal is still pretty ok. This is not a great argument in its favor, but I personally know several US contractors and govt employees that still use it for coordination, and they wouldn’t use it if they thought it was compromised (even by the US govt). A backdoor for one group means a backdoor for everyone.
Maybe, but you need to give it your mobile phone number, which makes it easy to get your real identity and even track your location.

The reason it’s on signal is because a lot of the people that use it aren’t on lemmy at all. They come from mastodon and raddle and places like that. Also we usually discuss the texts over a voice call instead of just on a forum
