Interesting, thx!
I don’t use mastodon much, if at all, but I like the distinction he makes between ‘social media’ (something to consume, like TV or radio) and ‘social network’ (as, well, actively networking with people, not being a passive consumer). I think I’ll start using that expression too.
Also:
ER: I think Mastodon and the fediverse are part of the old internet that was more about communicating with each other and having fun, and less about passive consumption and just essentially watching TV, which is what TikTok is, except worse.
100% this (next to TikTok, this should have mentioned a lot of YouTube too, imho). And it’s one of the reason why I quit using all social networks except the Fediverse and why I rekindled my personal blog. Blogs were and still are about having fun communicating while keeping control over our online presence and with whom we chose to interact, or not. I would love to see more people start blogging ;)
What went wrong with Threads is that it’s owned by Meta.
Wait threads died already?
No, the federation with threads didn’t go through. But I haven’t heard of threads in probably months, so probably just irrelevant.
Is threads still alive?
Was it ever?
… what it will take to grow the fediverse.
Orrr, we could let it be small and cozy. I like it this way, thank you.
I’m sure it would be relatively straightforward to create a client that randomly blocks 90% of the content to simulate a smaller system.
Eugene’s ambivalence to deeply hurtful business operations is off-putting. People aren’t merely mistrustful. They’re harmed and fleeing in some cases. Zuckerberg’s choices are sociopath choices.
Every dictator ever was basically mainstream. That’s what it usually means. Genghis and Kublai Khan were mainstream in their time too.
