New York, NYC, USA’s sludgy crossover thrash band from the 80’s released this banger of an album in 87. Lots of tongue in cheek attitude with social commentary as is customary for the genre. Linked is this heavy stomper with some melodic elements which completely stand out from the album. Album art is from one of the many reissues, the original is here.

Next to Carnivore might be VoiVod, but IIRC you already know them. Hellhammer/Celtic Frost were somewhat in that direction, maybe a little extreme but also weirdly famous nowadays. There’s certainly more in the field of early hardcore (back then people used to dispute if they were metal or -gasp!- punk, because, you know, metal and punk just don’t mix!) but next to nothing made it to CD and the vinyl has long been sold out. So there theoretically is a lot of similar stuff between '87 and '9? but you’d have to spend a lot of time on second hand record sales and probably spend insane money for some questionable insight. But, back to the original question, similar to Carnivore - hard. Really hard. Can’t think of any other band that uncompromizingly brutal and tongue in cheek at the same time.

Appreciate the nuggets, but let me broaden the query and make it a little more personal by asking for your specific recommendations in the subgenres of hardcore, punk, thrash or any mixture of them? I’ve always considered myself an outsider even among metalheads, so I’m definitely separate from the cultures that bred these in the first place - I have no misgivings about mixing oil and water or fucking nitroglycerin and alchohol lol.

I can think of a lot of crust punk and black metal mixtures that came out sorta fairly recently, I’m definitely on the hunt for faster sludge metal especially infused with thrash, so this Carnivore album was a nice little treat with some of the sludge style shining through here and there. I’ve found a few punk and hardcore bands that lean towards thrash in some cases but do not teeter towards crossover, like they’ve taken the base elements of both and smashed em together like rocks, which kinda works but doesn’t seem to stimulate growth I guess? Also found out stenchcore is a thing that fuckin rules.

Idk whichever way, this past year of uploads has been such an expansion of my music library and taste hah.

Agnostic Front (“One Voice”, first of all), D.R.I., Napalm Death (maybe the first, definitely the longest existing HC band), early Suicidal Tendencies, GBH (however strongly on the punk side), Crowbar, Black Flag for the beginning. Ah… Possessed’s debut *Seven Churches" had a certain punk vibe, too, even if it’s generally considered the first death metal album.
