Given that the MAU count is still on a slow decline, with over 90% of Lemmy.world users being inactive, I think it’s more of an indicator that MAU counts should be made more prominent in frontends rather than total users.

Fediverse@lemmy.world•Introducing FediDB Software Comparison, Lemmy vs Mbin vs PiefedEnglish
6·2 days agoA feature that Piefed has that I wish Lemmy would implement too is URL filters; perhaps it could be added to the chart after ‘word filters’?
Arctic has a great frontend implementation of it with Regex support, but the app hasn’t been updated in a while.
Also, for simplicity perhaps the tables should have the more advanced information implemented with a visibility toggle? All of the information listed may overwhelm new users and leave an impression that the Fediverse is particularly complex.

Fediverse@piefed.social•Can someone recommend a good instance that has defederated from .mlEnglish
10·3 days agoWhen accounting for several other relatively large instances I didn’t include in my original chart, fedia.io and lemmy.cafe also defederate lemmy.ml.
Expanding on @rimu@piefed.social’s point, the Piefed instances piefed.social and feddit.online silence lemmy.ml.

Fediverse@lemmy.world•Fediverse Observer is offline and no longer being developedEnglish
10·7 days agoWhile we should all be grateful for the work the developer put into the project, it’s also not uncommon for open source projects to use life cycle planning to determine potential redundancies if the original developer steps down. As things stand, their contributions are likely to go to waste, whereas ideally others could have picked up the torch from where they left off, preferably with historical data intact.

Fediverse@lemmy.world•Fediverse Observer is offline and no longer being developedEnglish
91·7 days agoWith how important Fediverse Observer is, the developer should have made an effort to hand it and its data over to another member of the community before winding the project down.

Fediverse@lemmy.world•Fediverse Observer is offline and no longer being developedEnglish
5·7 days agoHave you contacted them about the discrepancy? Ideally FediDB could just become the new Fediverse Observer.
Missing out on accurate data about Fediverse growth would really suck. 😕
Not 40, but also don’t want my thoughts and comments to be an income stream for a for-profit organization, whether that be by selling my data for profit, training an LLM with my data, or contributing to an inescapable network effect that can be increasingly monetized by various means.
The modern social media platform is not designed to foster positive interactions, but rather to maximize shareholder value.

Many things that were done entirely without LLMs before seem to magically ‘require’ them now.

Linux@programming.dev•I automated my entire Linux desktop with 4 bash scripts—and reclaimed hours every weekEnglish
31·24 days agoThe average user can’t be expected to remember all of the commands needed to use their regularly used programs, and those that don’t want to shouldn’t be expected to.
For instance, the terminal could be used to reformat storage devices, but MintStick essentially replicates the Windows GUI for doing it, making the transition less cumbersome for the average user.
The more users Linux has the more resources it will get. For power users, nothing stops developers from also maintaining terminal support.

Linux@programming.dev•I automated my entire Linux desktop with 4 bash scripts—and reclaimed hours every weekEnglish
144·24 days agoThe more you get into using Linux, the more likely you are to start using the Terminal for various tasks. Now, I’ll admit that you don’t need to do everything in the Terminal. But I truly believe knowing your way around it is pretty vital to the Linux experience (for me, anyway), whether it’s learning basic short commands or playing video through the Terminal.
To make Linux more palatable to Windows and macOS users, I think it’s important to shift as much of the Linux experience away from the terminal and into GUI programs as possible.

With DHH already being problematic, the moral foundation for the rest of the distribution’s financing seems dubious at best.
For Mastodon it’s the number of users that have logged in within the past month, so I presume Lemmy also tracks it with logins.
