You know what would make a lot of sense in this situation? Saying that he feared for his life. Why not try the excuse out this one time when you shot an adult pointing a loaded firearm at your face for fun?

It was real and pretty successful too. I remember old media writing about it and being upset. They got a lot of attention for not a lot of investment.
