Well for me, my wife had a ton of pictures laying around, and some scattered on google drive etc…
I basically did a huge scanning project in secret, set up an immich server and surprised her with it. That absolutely is one of her favorite gifts of all time.
Now as far as doing that with someone that didn’t stay in the same house, on an OS I wasn’t already managing… no probably wouldn’t imagine doing that unless the person was already showing signs of interest in managing something like that… in which case it should be done as a “lets build this together” project.

USB should work fine assuming the system itself can boot to usb (googling it looks like it can, you may have t hit delete to enter the bios to tell it to boot to usb first though)… distro inherently isn’t a huge varient in terms of resources used however desktop environment is. You absolutely want something with a very light desktop manager, LXDE, XFCE etc… So depends, if you are looking for something very simple… I’d say probably Linux Mint XFCE edition, if your goal is to learn how linux works, don’t mind reading up some documentation, arch linux is amazing.
If you have experience with any distribution or like something, almost every distro has a version that’s distributed with a light weight desktop manager. The desktop manager is where the bulk of the system requirement weight is.
I guess depends on the risk factor you want to take. For me I’d go VPN. You could go port forwarding, or you could even do something like temporarally use something like anydesk depending if you want to trust a corporation for remote access.
Yeah but my point is, conceptually, if we have a general concept of compressing things in memory… I’d imagine there’s enough people that could as well.
Not saying anything with regards to the odds of meta releasing it, or keeping it to themselves. I’d imagine it’s a matter of business. If their goal is to get ahead in the datacenter race, that might be a key worth holding on to for a while, or maybe they think that it will render shitty phones able to keep viewing facebook longer so it’s worth releasing to the public early. Point I was going at is simply the tech exists, it should be possible to replicate it by someone who isn’t as profit driven.
If I were running a tech project, and elon musk offered to help I’d quickly begin questioning all of my life choices.

I think the confusing part is, you are talking about starting a cross domain system. Which means, 2 or more people will need to set up and install their own versions (or you are planning to install it on multiple of your own domains), but the same can be accomplished just by, instead of asking people to install something new, form a group that guarantees to keep eachother federated, and have everyone you want make their communities and users on the unified cluster". Yes other instances might defederate you from them per their rules. But how is that different than no one outside your group even making an instance to begin with of “new open BB” to start with.
Why not, just host your own lemmy instance? Then you’d only get defederated if you got banned basically. or if you are looking for one for you and your friends. then you can just federate with the groups you want to federate with
Honestly though I feel like a federated linked in has the same problem as a federated dating site…, or really even federated facebook style social media etc…
Federation can work for something like lemmy, in that we can be useful in spite of a lack of userbase compared to the corporate version. 200 people scattered around the world to talk about linux, or open source works.
Trying to find someone close enough to you to date, or looking for a specialized employee or a close enough to work on site employee on the other hand, is a hell of a stretch.
For me the main point is, syncronization. Point is I want to read on my phone, or if i go to another computer catch up on it. If I set up a seperate RSS reader on each, then I’d have to figure out what’s read and what’s not. Honestly that’s a feature that google reader really had me spoiled in, I loved being able to use a work computer, browse through my rss feeds, star articles that I thought I may want to come back to, go home look at the starred ones and then go back.
Then google reader shut down, and I wanted to be able to do the same again, while also not being vulnerable to another shut down.
I mean depends on the solution you are using, but you can have multiple accounts on the remote backup. IE so upon completion of the backup. The remote machine moves the backup to an offline or read only share (depending if you need those credentials to access the data again later),
Obviously most important thing is your credentials that make the backup… should be very limited in scope to just doing those backups.
Biggest thing that I think is pretty badly phrased… is linux “system requirements”. considering in the windows world if you try and install with less than the required ram… the installer will usually stop you.
While in ubuntu they may say “requirement” but it’s a recomendation. You can install 26 into a VM with 1 GB of ram… and it will run. Really nothing in this version of ubuntu is more resource hungry than the previous version. So in short them boosting the number is just saying “if you use a typical amount of tabs open in your browser, 6gb ram is kind of needed”.
So yeah I’d say most likely the fair way to put it is, windows 11 will let you install on 4gb of ram… but most would say it’s very unusable even at a basic level with that, you can run ubuntu with that… it will probably not be a great experience, but not as bad as windows until you start running into large web apps or tons of tabs.
Heck OS’s really could just have an “overhead” kind of number or something. Because that’s the real thing, what you need is system specs that can handle your
system kernel + system services > Interface (be it terminal or gui) > application (and if that application is loading external sources like web pages, add that in too).
Point is your “minimum” line, should stop at what you consider the default parts of your distribution. IE interface and below.
Obviously no one is using it without applciations, but we don’t know what applications people are using. It’s not like we do this for storage. IE we aren’t saying "ok yeah everything we included is within 5 GB, so we’re setting the requirement at 200 TB because you can’t be a video editor without that much space.
I mean it’s a mixed bag… I get the idea of nothing should be removed, blocked, downvoted etc… as the ideal of free speach.
Right up until you look at every platform that explicitly avoids it and goes full “We’re all about free speech!”.
IE huge problem is, the first people to jump to those platforms, are the ones that have been banned for good reason from everywhere else. Which of course means… nazi’s come in droves Reasonable people that either have less borderline, or perhaps no borderline thoughts get there… see 500 posts from nazi’s, and head for the door imidiately, until it just turns into a nazi echo chamber.
I mean easy enough to recreate it with a more open database, but yeah still someone pays for hosting, but yeah key issue is userbase. Same flaw with trying to make a better dating site, or anything else location specific. It’s barely feasible for things like lemmy and mastadon where we pull from international pools of people that mostly don’t care if the other users are 500 miles away.
When you try to do a facebook equivelant, doesn’t really go anywhere because, people don’t need just people, but people they actually know.

as obviously one guy just reporting the gas stations around him, for an application that only he uses, is just a fancy notebook, and the real problem is would he continue using it long enough for a second to appear and make it actually beneficial for anyone.
and what isn’t… pretty sure in a Ross Ulbricht situation… there was more than enough stuff he needed to remain private currently open, and in the main files. Ulbright could have been on a live CD on a computer with no physical hard drive, and it wouldn’t have helped him since they nailed him after he had logged into the silk road.
and security on pages is useless if you are logged in.
We’re already talking the least of security problems (IE the device being physically confiscated).
In ross’s case which hurt him more do you think, the fact that his system probably had logs of what he installed… or the fact that it was taken while he was logged in as administrator to the silk road? and it supposedly contained a journal… not system logs, but activities that he specifically wrote out detailing his daily activities.
The point again is someone gaining physical access to the computer itself, while you are literally in the process of doing things that you don’t want known about, what you are currently working on is 100x more valuable to the thief, feds or whatever, than any of the low level stuff that the logs are likely to be recording.
Honestly not everyone will agree, but personally I can’t see any flaw in using AI to read through your code and point out security flaws. It’s going to happen regardless of whether you initiate it. It’s not like us sys admins are going “well I’m not going to patch the dirtyfrag vulnerability because it was discovered with AI”. I’d say knowing if AI can find a vulnerability in your code, is just a requirement right now.
