I want to meet the person who has a dev environment for their home media server. That man is my hero.

Those services get shut down randomly by cops and money problems. My local server doesn’t get shutdown.

Linux@lemmy.world•Arch Linux's AUR Sees More Than 400 Packages Compromised With MalwareEnglish
32·4 months agoI agree that that isn’t a lot of packages but it matters more which packages were compromised. Some random package like ten people have installed? Who cares. yay or spotify? We might have some problems.
Edit: after looking at the list some look fairly concerning. I’d definitely be doing a diff on my packages and the list of the compromised packages if i used Arch, btw.

Technology@lemmy.zip•Milei’s proposal to allow ‘non-human corporations’ run by AI causes concern in ArgentinaEnglish
7·4 months agoThe one story i read about an Ai running a coffee shop said the ai was horrible at inventory management. Things like one day buying 1000 loaves of bread for a company that might sell 5 sandwiches in a day. Or not buying any straws for weeks then buying one single straw. I’m not worried about ai being nefarious but i am worried about a dumbpocalypse.

Linux@lemmy.world•Linux Is Exempt From Colorado and California's Age Verification Laws - OSTechNixEnglish
14·5 months agoIt’s not a delay. It’s a trojan horse. First you fuck with the closed source OSes and then later when everyone is cool with that you can just do the same to linux and say “look at windows, they’re fine. you’ll be fine too.”
Only if the people have to give up whatever assets were purchased with said debt otherwise you’ll still have a class of people with much more than everyone else since billionaires purchase almost all of their things with debt, not with their own assets.

Technology@lemmy.zip•Hyundai Reportedly Demanding ‘Tens of Thousands’ of Boston Dynamics Robots ASAPEnglish
15·5 months agoWhy would hyundai of all companies want to go all in on human form robots? They should know as car manufacturers that robots don’t need to be humanoid to work well. A made to tailor robot is almost always the better solution. Need a robot to do your dishes? It’s called a dishwasher. Need a robot to mow your lawn? It’s called an automated lawnmower. What niche does a humanoid robot slot into that you can’t do with some system purpose designed for your needs?
A user hosted mesh of black boxes that are opaque as to how they made their decisions (yes even the ones that “say” what their thought process is).
Very obviously just a rubber floor mat upside down.

Technology@lemmy.zip•Meta Smart Glasses Can Now Track All the Food You Put Into Your MouthEnglish
6·6 months agoMany States at least have laws in place you can’t record audio/video without proper “all party” consent.
As much as I dislike these things, that isn’t always true. Many states you have no privacy in public spaces. It’s why paparazzi exist.
There are laws for recording confidential communications, private conversations, or inside private residences but otherwise anyone can record outside perfectly well.

teft@piefed.socialtoLinux 101 stuff. Questions are encouraged, noobs are welcome!@lemmy.world•Lock up problemEnglish
2·6 months agoMy next test would be trying to a live installation in order to see if it’s hardware related or software.
Boot into a live cd (I would use one that is the same distro as you already have) and do what you normally do. See if the machine locks up. If it doesn’t then you’ve probably got some broken setting or program crashing your machine. If it does crash then some other hardware is causing the issue. You’d have to start taking out each piece of hardware out of the system to see if your crash is still there or not.

OP might have news@lemmy.world or the instance lemmy.world blocked. That would prevent those posts from showing in the feed.
