Mint does actually listen to their community. Maybe they found out these apps were lacking some functionality. I can understand they would want xapps for calendar and reading. I currently use Qt apps, other than GNOME calendar, can’t remember a decent app for calendar and eBook reading outside Qt.

I wouldn’t have a problem if it was only 100 MB. The problem is when a couple of programs amount for several GB of dependencies. I still use flatpaks, but can’t have this in general. Flatpaks are more like extremely exceptional in my systems.

There are apps without public repos at all. Here’s a report of trackers and permissions the app may ask, but again, you don’t need to grant it more than just network access because is for Reddit.
I can’t give any value to your guarantees. There’s the code, there’s an analysis of trackers and the history of the app. Moreover, I can’t see a concrete reference to your claims. These things, on the other hand, make me feel rather secure about using it behind a VPN as I said, but that’s me.
IDK what personal info could it be sharing. You don’t need to login, it doesn’t ask for permissions and it’s a GPLv3 app. Where did you get that idea?
I use fedora, debian and mint because I have several computers for different usecases. I wouldn’t recommend Fedora for this, all the others are gold in my experience, but newbies really should go through Mint first.
I use RedReader without an account, connected through a VPN. It’s FOSS, but with these settings, it’s really slow. Okay for text and images, bad for videos.
I used Sailfish OS on my good old Redmi Note 4 (mido). It was an interesting OS with the usual lack of niche apps for an alternative OS. Anyway, be cautious of Jolla’s history of broken promises. I’m not saying don’t buy, just be careful and level your expectations.

Yes, more or less. But the issue is not about running local models; that’s fine even if it’s only for curiosity. The issue is about shoving so-called AI in every activity with the promise it will solve most of your everyday problems, or for mere entertainment. I’m not against “AI”, I’m against the current commercialization attempts to monopolize the technology by already huge companies that will only seek profit, no matter the state of the planet and the other non-millionaire people. And this is exactly why even a bubble burst is concerning to me, as the poor are the ones that will truly suffer the consequences of billionaires betting in their mansions with their spare palaces.
Also, the failure gets registered forever, for example, in RAID disks you’ll never get a 100% healthy disk with such situation.
