my org uses Nextcloud. Its possible to set up folders that are read-only. We have a ‘secretary’ folder and a ‘file drop’ folder. The secretary is read-only except for the current secretary. The file drop any user can put files in, but only the secretary can edit or delete them.

We drop files (like signed contracts) into the ‘file drop’, and the secretary (a person!) moves them into the secretary folder which is visible to all users, but read only.

two that get almost daily use from me:

cleared cookies for mastodon.social and can now log in, but can’t post due to ‘503’.

ed: actually, a few tries later was able to post. guess service is spotty right now.

Could be they’ve improved! I didn’t have much trouble opening mine but I did need a special star bit for the screws, and they tended to fall out without thread lock.

dell is manufactured globally, in china and in other places. probably lenovo too.

I think the thinkpad T14 series is pretty mainstream for linux - except for the Gen6 snapdragon one. Arch wiki thinks the gen5 will work

I had a top of the line Dell (precision 5520) that I bought with Ubuntu on it, so it ran linux very well. But there were quality issues, mainly the battery swelling up and making the keyboard stop working. Then the screws for the case fell out and the hinge kind of broke, and the power connector stopped working, as did its replacement. I think you aren’t really supposed to work on the dells yourself as it had special screws, not plain philips heads.

Maintainability on thinkpads is better, in general. And I like the way the computer feels more - just better design.

it does nothing. might as well not be plugged in. at this point I don’t remember what killed it. maybe trying to transition to another os.

my pinebook pro has been bricked for at least 3 years now. still dead.

nixos, same as the last 10 years. more packages than ever on it, and I’m better at wrangling nix stuff now for my own packages. Besides my personal machines, I also use it to admin several servers for work. All the config for all the machines goes into git and I can see exactly what changed and when, configuration-wise.

if the bubble ever collapses maybe AI use will cost too much to harass FOSS projects with it.
