    That thread is mildly hilarious with the people snarkily saying if someone doesn’t like it, fork it and remove the AI slop and develop from there — and then people admitting they don’t have the skill to do the software development/they don’t want to learn/they wouldn’t be able to recognize the AI generated code from the human written code/they’re not going to fund AI free development and generally glossing over that these are unpaid hobby projects and they’re getting mad at a volunteers free work. Like damn the community gardens volunteers keeping the plants alive using unnatural big agriculture’s chemical products rather than dedicating even more of their free time to the community garden I want to consume

    A bunch of these people I’m certain would not work for free and make that a moral and political statement about the value of labor but not extend that energy to the work of open source software developers. The guy works on a project that I’m certain would have a low ceiling for amount of monthly donations. People whining about him using AI who themselves won’t contribute any more than words of affirmation. So pretty much worthless. Absolutely worthless after like half a year of a demanding user base whose only contribution is prey much like a kid grumpily saying, “well I said thank you! You happy!? Now can you do what I said!?”






  • A Steam Deck 2, unlikely. AMD and Intel x86 chips are competitive with ARM chips in that 10-15w range. Battery life is great in laptops. They’re competitive with Apple at the same power ranges. There’s going to be performance overhead translating x86 to ARM along with compatibility issues as FEX is maturing. Deck 2 should be targeting as much performance in the up to 15w range as possible. CPU instruction translator goes against that

    Deck 2 makes most sense to stick with AMD. AMD CPU+GPU. There’s no real cost savings getting AMD to integrate in an ARM chip. Qualcomm GPU’s have far worse drivers than AMD and unproven to be as hardware feature performance as AMD/Nvidia. Intel still sucks power with their Arc cards compared to AMD/Nvidia at the same performance range. Nvidia ARM+GPU I doubt provides any cost savings. PowerVR and Mali graphics have trash drivers and probably not feature competitive with AMD/Nvidia for PC expectations

    Steam Deck lite down the line sure where an ARM Deck that is stronger than the AMD deck and cheaper/lighter/fanless or maintains the low price of the old deck because inflation. But that should be down the line for FEX to mature and be certain that the ARM hardware is strong enough to make the translation overhead a moot point for something that’s supposed to match a gen 1 Deck

    Maybe Windows and Linux consumer ARM really takes off and we start seeing games ship ARM binaries. Then eventually it’ll make sense for the high end handheld to go ARM. FEX mature for the older games that never updated with an ARM binary







  • It does. On Linux you can stick to graphical applications like you do on windows, it’s just when people get on Linux they suddenly have the interest to try more things that they didn’t try on windows. 90% of the time I’m using handbrake for videos conversions. Then there’s the 10% of the time where command line ffmpeg because the functionality of the software is often greater than everything that the graphical interface has implemented or ever plans to implement.

    This applies to windows too. General users usually don’t need to go into PowerShell or a WSL shell but a lot of professional users will do so. Not just IT but people that process videos, images, a lot scientist, not just Matlab types, but people that got to do mapping stuff. You grab map files, terrain data - whatever - then you need to process it for another application. A lot of cases, good luck finding a GUI that hits your specific use case but some guy that had the same problem years ago got a one liner bash command, better chance for niche use cases in my opinion.

    If you play games on Steam and you ever wanted to skip intro movies or a launcher and you Google for a solution and you get an answer that says to add something to the games launch options in Steam. That’s pretty close to what people mostly do in a terminal.

    Especially when on windows freeware is so frequently adware and/or abandoned last updated for windows 7 and it’s a wildcsrd if that specific functionality that is really just ffmpeg or imagemagick in the background doing the work

    Deleting a huge amount of files. You’ll come across cases windows, Mac, Linux where the animations add a ton of time to the operation compared to just rm -rf 'ing a folder. Folder with a ton of files. Terminal searching for a file can be so much faster and responsive compared to GUI file explorer

    Creating graphical interfaces is of critical importance for user applications for accessibility but plenty of times it’s just way faster to do it in a terminal - same with Windows and Mac.







  • Yes. Need the kind of love desktop hardware got for Linux with mobile hardware. I don’t need tap to pay and mobile deposit. That can come when the ball really gets rolling and the user base is too large to not service. For now I’d be happy with consistent phone/text support, signal application, a mobile Firefox, and the phone dockable to run full desktop applications. Strong enough hardware. Google are a bunch of jackasses. Need more phones to support PostmarketOS or something

    Most apps I can replace with a web browser but the mass market has shown it’s preference for an app store. Got to get payments integrated into Flathub


  • Exciting. I’m not interested in a PC but that’d be good if it had a 9060xt in it. Be a good boost to FSR4 adoption and it’d be a nice baseline for AAA games for the normal gamer that just wants plug and play. 1080-1440 native and 4k FSR would be good with that for the newest high end AAA games. RX 7600 not bad either for most games though including up to 4k. Just those pesky AAA games at native 4k. If it’s a standalone VR headset, I would likely buy that
