I built Firefox in about an hour? Before deciding that Gentoo is my next distro. Hoping it would teach me more about building software.
It works so well on its own that I learned nothing.
I love it, it’s the best thing ever, and I won’t use any binary bistro ever.
And yes, USE flags are the bomb.
My other systems are SteamOS or Mint.
It’s not like I’m dual booting Windows.
I use it to show off me playing on Gentoo.
It’s almost as if the top comment suggested people don’t forget that or something.

Then what do you do that requires more than 8GB RAM?

After install, the distro just works.
I’ve had more failed upgrades in Ubuntu.
So if you have base Linux skills, you will have a rock solid distro, which may take a while to update, but you can limit the number of CPU cores for compiling, and therefore use the PC even during that.
And USE flags are so addictive, while being just strings in a single file.
I believed I would learn more about Linux when daily driving Gentoo. But all I learned is how to run three commands to keep the system updated, including compiling the kernel. And it just works.

What do you do in browser?
At work I would be extremely fine with 8GB, and we use Windows browser apps. Even they would run fine with 4GB of RAM.
So why 16?
Sodium batteries about to hit the market next year, at $20/kWh, and lots of cycles - free energy for life.
Also, they can just flag their input.
Office is online nowadays…
And what is the percentage of users who need such specific software?
I have, and a colleague next to me handed me a Fedora DVD on a third consecutive day of hour and half long morning windows updates.
Never looked back.
How many people have such work envs?
I hate that people (not you) keep saying “Linux is for tech people only” and “My workflow is super Windows specific”.
Like is both are true, fine, but that must be like 0.1% of users.
