There was an episode in Stargate SG-1 where they find some pretty lights in a temple and they couldn’t take their eyes off it. The longer you feeded the addiction, the easier it made you forget about everything else, until you forgot to eat, drink or sleep.

Not saying social media has the same properties but… “It’s fun”.
