I also want to point out that the Wayland devs are, by and large, the exact same people as the X11 devs. These aren’t white monster fueled hotshots working for a FAANG with a massive case of Not Invented Here. The people who knew X11 best designed Wayland from the foundation up to be the better solution.

I respect your perspective and personal experience, and I’m not trying to convince you (I’m not even downvoting you, as it’s not a disagreement button). I’m trying to convince whoever might come along and read this that the small extra price is worth it if their computer is going to hold data dear to them and be running 24x7.
ECC is extremely good at covering cosmic ray bitflips, which happen with extreme regularity on software that runs and modifies data on the fly- server software. Yes, even home run stuff. That’s just playing Russian roulette, it probably won’t break anything, but why take the risk at least 10 times every day?
It’s also great at catching failing RAM sticks and preventing them from doing horrible things to every bit of data running through them. This is the failure ECC caught for me at home twice.
I have only 2.5 decades in the enterprise server and software space, I won’t claim to your 4. But I know I wouldn’t take that risk at work, and I value my home data more rather than less.
I’m not a researcher or even a particularly well practiced rhetorician, so here’s probably a much more convincing argument.

I’ll strongly disagree. Anyone who cares about the data they store in their server should care about ECC. There’s a specific reason it’s used so widely by servers, not just financial databases or whatever.
There’s also a ton of misinformation on the Internet about it, so don’t buy into the “ZFS write hole” or whatever. But ECC is very important in my experience. It’s saved my bacon in a material way twice now, and in ways that normal RAM would have just silently continued breaking things. Really that’s not much of a price premium if you’re willing to buy used, so it’s more a question of why not?
There are many computers (especially business line computers including low power SFF) that will take ECC or even ship with it from ebay or whatever. Or you can build rigs with ECC, I’ve done this route twice and had good results.
The snap store not being foss is such a slap in the face. The ads in the terminal (and a few other places) are particularly egregious as well.
I bailed when they did Mir and Upstart. You could literally see their ego affecting their technical decisions, leading up to “Not Invented Here” syndrome, like you see in particularly culty software companies in silicon valley.
Like one poster said, I was an early adopter (Warty) and felt the warm and cozy ‘Ubuntu’ everywhere in their system. It was visionary and beautiful in it’s simplicity and hopefulness. They sold out.
DWL might be the choice then. It’s a Wayland take on DWM, so minimal as can be.
What other Wayland tilers have you tried? Niri, Sway, and River are all established and have become stable. I’ve heard good things about DWL too, but it’s not something I’ve tried.
I’d recommend avoiding Hyprland and the other projects by that dev. Incredibly toxic and transphobic.
Granted, it’s open source so you’re not exactly financially supporting them, so it’s more a question of platforming and justifying the sponsorships they get from third parties.
Manjaro is such an antipattern of a distro.
Arch Linux has a good installer now.
If you need good installer and sane defaults, EndeavorOs exists.
And the biggest advantages of arch Linux- the configurability, rolling updates, and AUR, all effectively get broken by Manjaro.

I don’t understand what you’re trying to say. Matrix is the communication protocol between clients and servers. It can’t dictate how a client displays those communications. It would be like TCP demanding that webpages be laid out a certain way.
I much prefer QT. The GTK ethos since Gnome 3 is basically: “We’re making this for our own needs, we don’t care about what you want”
And while I sympathize and understand the frustrations that downstream brings, I don’t think any project not part of Gnome/GIMP should be building on it.
QT is built from the ground up to be used by anyone, regardless of needs or use case. It’s a better fit for building complex software like desktop environments.

I know you meant vlan, but I love the idea of a loyal tightly knit band of cameras and doorbells.
I ran vanilla Arch on 3 machines for over 15 years, but these days I just use Endeavor. Easy install, sane defaults, and then hands you a fully working and customizable arch. Absolutely love the project.
I do host my own. I don’t notice the overhead honestly, it’s very minimal.

Totally agreed. LLMs shouldn’t be asked to know things, it’s counterproductive. They should be asked to DO things, and use available tools to do that.
OpenWebUI has TTS and STT.
Fish has more baked in solutions to problems I have in ZSH that require plugins and hacking to get working somewhat properly. Specifically, much better command completion, configuration, and flexibility. The cost is that it’s a little heavier out of the box. The rust rewrite they did actually improved that massively though and seems to have gone well.
