No lie, they’re awesome. I’ve got two R720s, and they really aren’t bad. I leave one off. The other runs 4-5 VMs and doesn’t spin loud at all. Lack rack, surplus drives, a refurbed UPS and it just goes.

I have all the services on one machine and use proxmox backup server on the other one. It’s nice. I’ve got emergency configuration files etc backed up on the nas as well.
That’s why there are 6. There’s a pool with a hot spare. Just don’t want to pay $350 or whatever to replace a $90 drive.
The most well-timed thing I ever did was buy 6 2tb NVMe drives in August last year

3·3 months agoYep did this too. ladders in the rafters with steel cables and snap hooks to eye bolts. Extra large car parts like spare windshields up there too
I’ve got pfsense on a VM, works great. Opnsense is good too and easier to deal with than digging out a download from Netgate, but doesn’t have pfblocker integrated.
