What an incredibly stupid thing to do. LLMs are not the correct tool for this problem. Especially not like this.

I learned today that the board of directors at this huge multinational non-tech company I’m at wants 80% of people using AI, and has a target for lines of code written by AI.
Both of those are insane.
The lines of code one is extra double insane. People knew lines of code was a shit metric in like the 90s.

As someone who works in software, I’ve been using macs at work for more than a decade. One job had Linux machines. One place had windows for developers and it was a shit show.
Apple isn’t amazing but at least the terminal is sensible.
I comment. Reminds me of how I’d end up playing medic in tfc/tf2- someone has to do it.
I don’t post original stuff often, though.
Adding websearch to the start bar’s search was solving a problem that didn’t exist.
Maybe the average user is so ignorant and bad at computers they don’t understand this. They don’t know what a browser is. They don’t know what a website is. They don’t know what a program is. It’s all just stuff.
Personally, I’d rather spend billions on education than AI slop and other patches on “people are kind of dull”
Mint is fine. I went with pop!_os because at the time mint didn’t play well with my hardware.
Make sure you test things from the install live disk before you commit. Internet access, displays, audio should all work.

I feel like most people don’t buy software anymore. Everything runs in the browser.
Like, nerds and enthusiasts and game playing people sure. But most people? Nah. It’s all Instagram, Facebook, tiktok, Reddit, YouTube. Maybe like roll20 if they’re a dnd nerd. Most people aren’t doing Photoshop or blender.

Good. The more people switch, the more support there will be.

Sometimes it’s easier to type cd ~/D{tab}/M{tab}{enter} open . than using the GUI.
Plus all the fancy stuff that people do with scripting

may genuinely be unskilled when it comes to computers in general.
I do not accept this idea that people are so unskilled at computers they can’t install Linux, and are so immutably so they can’t get better.
Like yeah sometimes you have to ask for help or watch a YouTube video. That shit’s free and right there.

I think installing Linux exposes you to higher severity issues, like “now it won’t boot”. Once you get over that initial setup, it’s not much different than windows or apple.
If more computers came with it pre installed, it would be even easier for folks.
I think about half the time I’ve installed Linux it was fine. The other half were problems with esoteric solutions.
Still glad I made the switch.

Linux doesn’t really have the profit motives that lead to enshittification.
I guess a bigger entity could try to start charging for… something… Support, maybe, but that seems unlikely to take off.

I think there’s a certain kind of user who doesn’t really learn concepts, but rote actions. They click the start menu and then excel to open excel, but they don’t really understand that the start menu is an application launcher and Excel is an application that can be opened in other ways. It’s very one dimensional.
Then when something changes, like the application launcher is moved, they freak out. They don’t have a mental model.
That’s how my mother is, anyway. It’s all magic with no underlying coherent anything. Not sure how to fix that, because it usually comes up when they’re mad or scared, and that’s not a time anyone will learn.

1d4-1 is 0 to 3. Sorry, not the point.
One factor might be location. I’m in a major city.

What do you mean exactly? If you think some people are just innately attractive and that’s immutable and unattainable, that’s nonsense.
Easily changed stuff like a better haircut, better fitting clothes, a better photo, all go a long way.
I’m a very average guy with a wardrobe of thrift store finds and band tshirts. I’m not even 6’ tall. But I did try to whole-ass engage with every potential match instead of doing bullshit like chatgpt or copy-pasted ice breakers.
Also a real fast way to be unattractive is having an ugly worldview. Most people aren’t going to like someone who treats them like shit. Someone who has a genuine conversation and shares interests will go farther.

I started buying music in 2015 (mostly Bandcamp) and I have no regrets. I have a big library now of drm free music. Some months I spend nothing and still enjoy music, without ads.

to meet the man she’d spent the last three weeks opening up to.
First off, don’t chat for three weeks before a date. That’s a terrible idea. You’re going to build up a faulty model of who they are and then be jolted when you meet them in real life. Which is exactly what happened here.
Second, to all the people using chat gpt, I don’t know how to say this nicely but fucking git gud. What a bunch of sad sacks that can’t have a conversation, can’t read a wikipedia article, can’t even try their honest best.
a workaround for what he sees as the coded jargon of modern dating. “Like, what do you mean ‘What’s my attachment style?’” he balks. “Every girl on the apps has this thing about ‘love languages’ – it’s just gibberish
Is it though? Take five minutes to read about it if it’s so ubiquitous. What a sack of shit.
I’m a pretty average guy and I was getting 1d4-1 dates per week just by matching with people and asking them out. You really don’t need to do more than be genuine, present, and interested in them.

Fed up with Microsoft. I had a windows 10 computer they said couldn’t update to windows 11, and they said Recall was coming, so I said fuck it. Switched to mint, and now I’m trying pop!_os.
Way back like 10+ years ago I ran Ubuntu for a while, but I play a lot of video games and support was lacking. Wine, proton, and other tools have come a long way since then.
The advantage of Mac is it’s more widely used and thus more widely supported (for things that are supported at all). You can just buy an apple computer from a trusted source and it’ll work. Linux doesn’t quite have that yet. If more people move to Linux , you’ll find better drivers and stuff.
