You’re right and more than fair about it. Thanks for a mature response. I definitely get games catering to their communities and those communities, for the past decade or so, have been on Discord in droves… So it only makes sense. It just makes the world a little bit more painful for the people who don’t want to use Discord. And I definitely also get that alternatives (Matrix, a dedicated wiki or web documentation, etc) might take more work for a dev to set up… I guess I just miss when the web felt more open and usable.

I am a big fan of that flag.

The thing is, some of us really care about ethics outside the scope of just what happens with the source. Is documentation and knowledge not just as important? Should our community not care about privacy? What do you think the “F” in “FOSS” is all about?

Hey, honestly, thanks for being mature and real about this. I 100% am going to be migrating away from systemd after seeing how quickly this happened at the project and yhat Microsoft can basically decide they want code added to it; but I’m not gonna drag this random junior dev… I’m gonna choose to direct my hate at Microsoft instead. If they orchestrated these changes, that is the story here. When did that corporation get its fingers into the cookie jar, and how do I now make sure my entire software stack is free from projects where Microsoft can have this level of influence? That’s the tactical picture that matters.

Oh Gods, I learned the hard way to never roll back a package unless you really know what you’re doing. And I learned that lesson way back in 2013 or 2014, when I’d only been using Linux for a year or two full-time. Now I’m on a rolling distro and have everything as purely the latest version, and if I come across some weird thing that involves rolling back a package to an older version, I will simply not do that and will look for other solutions instead. Sometimes it’s as simple as creating a symlink so that when a program looks for libWhatever2.1.5 it gets quietly redirected to libWhatever2.6.0

While I do agree that their focus should absolutely be on the browser, I do actually really like that they offer a paid Wireguard-based VPN with endpoints in dozens of countries. I think that makes sense for them, given their mission and everything, and actually gives them a revenue source.
