I don’t really remember why everyone hated him (Besides being annoying and once using a slur, for which he probably was lacking complete cultural understanding), but he was pretty young when he popped off. Not everyone changes as they age, but many people do. It’s very reasonable to say he is a different person now.
If you know someone in IT, it’s worth asking them what their company does with old computers. At my last place, we sent off old PCs to recyclers, old often only being 3 years or so. Most of them were basic i5s with 16GB of RAM, but they were more than powerful enough for a good docker host. I’ve got small stack of them that I rescued from the recycle pile.
Not to mention the laptops that went to the recyclers. Of course, many of you might think that is wasteful, but the recyclers were refurbishing them and reselling. We got them off our hands for free, and they got to make a few bucks off them.
I moved onto piefed when the lemmy instance I was on shut down, and I don’t regret it at all. It’s a solid choice and promotes options in the threadiverse.
One may want to have adult conversations without seen porn. A NSFW filter is quite blunt.
WebRTC is a thing. You don’t have to build all that from scratch. It’s very reasonable to piece together a lot of standard technologies to make this progress much quicker. I haven’t looked into this project, so I don’t know, but I know it was pretty trivial to setup a WebRTC app 10 years ago, which would appear to be a fully functioning video app.
I wouldn’t be surprised if it was soldered on because it shares the RAM with the GPU. That’s pretty common these days, and GPUs want both high performance RAM and low latency. There are solutions to significantly lower the trace lengths between expandable RAM and the CPU/GPU, but the standard never took off.
It wasn’t a common format for sure. It was the forums for BYOND, a “game engine” specifically designed to make multiplayer games easily. You could think of it as a proto roblox.
The forums I visited in those days was threaded, with trees to view commons. It was a proto version of the way Lemmy/Piefed/Reddit comments work, you just could only see one comment at a time. I never liked the flat style of PHPBB and the like.
It comes from marketing copy. Same with the emdash. My company has a style guide for marketing material and it calls out using bulleted lists and em dashes exactly how AI does it.
The hardware requirements are quite steep, but I’ve got local AI running in my house. It’s mostly just there for when I want to screw around with it, but technically I could setup OpenClaw and point it to my AI server to use as its brain.
I’m not stupid enough to do that on any real computer I use, but it might be cool to do on a VM where I can tightly control what it can see and have access to. Of course, that limits its usefulness, but security has a cost.
At the same time, I can see the allure of a real digital assistant. I’m old enough to remember when professionals had personal assistants that not only helped them keep track of their work life, but also their personal life. Scheduling their personal life like doctors appointments or house repairs. Dealing with vendors to make sure stuff actually gets done, and making sure they are in the right place at the right time. That would be rad to have.
Blame Microsoft for repurposing a wifi dongle as a controller interface, and using an at-runtime firmware override for switching it to controller mode.
I worry that one day all rambley people on the Internet will be assumed to be AI. Wrote more than 3 sentences and used proper capitalization? Must be a bot. I, at least, I still have my spelling and grammar mistakes to remind people I’m human.
It’s been on my todo to check out RetroDeck. The screenshots on flathub look good. If it makes configuration and settings easier than retroarch than it will be great. I feel like retroarch is designed with the worst possible defaults for every single setting.
I certainly can become a problem. Reaching back to Digg, MrBabyMan had way too much power and influence, even though he basically just spammed news articles 24/7. Thankfully, the threadiverse doesn’t seem to be designed to promote people over content.
Finally, I can throw away my red/blue glasses and play Rad Racer for the NES the way it was meant to be played.
Another worth while consideration is heat generation. That takes more power to offset that too. During the winter maybe it wont be so bad, but it can be brutal in the summer.
Wasabi is a very affordable destination for backups. And it has the advantage of not being one of the big three.
That’s a great point. Good stage setting for custom emoji and possibly a local GIF picker.
Always nice to have options.
FYI, on Windows and KDE (probably other DEs as well), you can press Super+. to open an emoji picker.
A lackrack is a fun little project, but you would struggle to have full size servers in there without issues.
