Yes, to all points. I’ve backed out of busy or large servers primarily because I didn’t care about them. Control is granular enough to join specific channels, as well. I don’t know that anyone can even tell I’m bridged.

I don’t know that Matrix is that resource intensive. I run a Matrix server with ~30 users on a Raspberry Pi and a 1TB nvme.

So, I host a Matrix Stack and I bridge to Signal (and Discord). It’s the best of both worlds – all my messages funnel through one application.

Seeing as you’re using Lemmy/PieFed, I’m going to guess you’ve got a handle on how federation works. I’d suggest Matrix.

Fair assessment – exactly my setup. I should have only used one account like the author. Getting my family set up on individual accounts with “shared” calendars was kind of a nightmare.

I’m still looking for a CALDAV web front-end similar to NextCloud (but not NC). If anyone has suggestions, let me know.

Not a bad recommendation, but I disagree.

Rocket chat is just as heavy (in fact, it federates to Matrix), uses MongoDB, and has steadily pulled features behind a paywall for years. To me, if I’m hosting the service on my own machines and I’m not using their live support, the idea of paying for the privilege of using it is absurd.

Matrix has come a long way, including integrated voice and video chats.

Yeah, most likely. The reason is simple: folks want a desktop that doesn’t fight them, has fast window switching, navigation, and task management… and then stays out of the way.

GNOME knows best, though, right? pArAdIgM sHiFt ™! What is a desktop? Hide everything!

For all it’s faults, KDE is much more usable. Xfce is great, too. They treat the desktop/laptop computer as exactly that – not some strange hybrid between traditional desktops, mobile UI, and kiosk GUIs.

Not exactly what you’re looking for, but I host an instance of Audiobookshelf on my LAN. It pulls podcasts via RSS automatically. Handles metadata. Accessable everywhere. Has a web and phone client (again, the phone’s not what you need, but it’s there).

Runs well on a Pi. With docker, you’d be set up in minutes.

Welcome to the world of Linux. Check out Fedora Kinoite. Here’s how they’re similar:

✅ It’s immutable – core OS files are read only. Just like the SteamDeck, this is more stable and secure. Updates happen all at once and the entire system can be rolled back to a working configuration (“snapshot”) if it all goes south.

✅ Applications are containerized and installed via a software store. Flatpak via Flathub is my personal preference, here.

✅ It uses the KDE Plasma desktop environment. In Linux there are a handful of DEs to choose from. The SD uses KDE and so does Kinoite. This is probably where you’ll see most similarities (that Windows '95 feel).

✅ Fedora’s community, like the SD, is large. Got a problem? There’s probably someone on the forums who had the same issue and can provide a solution.

I’ve been running it exclusively for two years now. As a self proclaimed distro-hopper, that’s really remarkable.

It runs quite well; Docker’s not a full fledged virtual machine so much as a virtualization layer. I also love the portability of running this in Docker. I rsync a backup of this and the Appdata folder every night. When or if this server fails, I can be up and running again in minutes on another machine.
