That’s not a loophole, it’s the purpose of the license. The MPL was made to make embedding an otherwise open-source codebase into a new (non-open) project doable. There used to be several commercial products that used the gecko web engine and other mozilla code, and mozilla code was generally provided under a dual (MPL/GPL) or triple (MPL/GPL/LGPL) license so that developers could choose.

This feels like halfway between lemmy and nostr. I wonder about the utility of it tho? federated content gets duplicated everywhere and is unencrypted by nature (except for DMs on some platforms) so aside from proof of authenticity/ownership I don’t see what this approach gets you?
For copyleft licenses like the GPL maybe this would be true if the original, attributed code, along with all of the new alterations, modifications, enhancements and improvements, were also fed back into the machine, but even then it seems unlikely. Copyleft is explicitly about keeping derivative works in the public sphere, not really about ownership of ideas per se.

If they’re serious about it it will eventually be made into a requirement for serious services. I could imagine federal regulations requiring online banking, accessing government services (including school-related services), and maybe even ecommerce and payment processing looking for this trusted info, and refusing to run otherwise. Like TPM on steroids.

This post is a synopsis of his book, which is a call for post-liberal, pro-American-power, anti-decadence, and defense-tech nationalism. Not exactly MAGA, not exactly neocon, and not exactly centrist Democrat, but basically saying: “the republic needs warriors, engineers, and belief.” It’s like if you took W40K and shrunk it down to a global scale.

I think big tech has proven that it cannot be trusted.
I’d go a step further and say that if big tech must control the internet it would be better to not have an internet at all (and that’s coming from someone who remembers life without it well and currently uses it a lot). But given the current situation I would hand back any true productivity gains, casual enjoyment, etc to take away the global narrative control that a tiny handful of companies have.

And I think scale is the critical thing for other reasons too. We know, for example, that dust from the Sahara circulates the globe and brings nutrients to US soils. While I don’t think there’s much harm from something even at the current scale of the Gobi deployments, at a certain point deploying anything en masse is basically geoengineering, with all of the potential unexpected consequences that that brings.
