Its one of those laws that are on the books mostly becuase no one has got around to modifying it and removing the bits that are unused.

I honestly find this obsession with LLM energy usage weird. The paper listed gives typical energy usage per query at around 1Wh for most models at a reasonable output length (1000 tokens). A typical home in the UK directly uses around 7,400 Wh of electricity and 31,000 Wh of gas per day.

I just don’t see why some people are obsessing over something which uses 0.01% of someone’s daily electricity usage as opposed to far more impactful things like decarbonising electricity generation, transport and heating.

Obviously its important, but pretending its not political doesnt make any sense. If a community doesnt want to discuss politics (and as far as I’ve seen the OP didnt say which community this was in) then its a reasonable post to remove.

They tried that method with the steam machines, it didnt work. A bunch of companies put out half arsed cash in versions and it went nowhere. By putting Valve’s whole weight behind one platform that they tested extensively they got a great product that has made waves. Opening it up now that it has momentum makes sense, but they absolutely made the right call making the steam deck the focus rather than making it hardware agnostic.

It takes only an incredibly basic knowledge of computers and brains to know that we cannot make an actual intelligent program using the Von Neumann style of computer.
