  • She did a follow-up on this on a recent Q&A with Adam Savage. She doesn’t use it at all, because her stump is too small. This means she has almost no leverage and strength in the stump. She said she likes the aesthetics but it’s not practical.

    Imho she needs something with like a servo assist or something hydraulic. But that means stuff like a power supply, pump, sensor, controller, plumbing etc. It would get messy fast for something that’s on your hand. If it’s more of the hand it could make sense, but the loss of only the little finger probably has almost zero impact on the use of the hand.


  • In trouble shooting it always important to answer at least these questions when asking for help:

    • What are you trying to achieve, eg what is the end result you are hoping for.
    • What is the expected behavior, or how do you think it should work?
    • What is the experience behavior, so what actually happens and how does that differ from what you expected.
    • What steps have you taken in trouble shooting. Are there things you’ve checked or ruled out? How so? What did you try?
    • Any background you think is relevant, so which software, hardware, versions, urls etc.

    This will help other people help you quickly and efficiently. This will greatly improve your chance of other people being able to help you, or you being able to help yourself.

    Just so you know, operating spinning drives this way is a bad idea. If the platters are spinning and the drive tips over, the rotation of the drives resists the movement. This gyroscopic force is enough for the platters to touch the heads which are flying a tiny distance above the platter. Obviously this is a bad thing and will damage the drives.

    A quick fix is to just lay them flat or fix both of them together so they have a more stable base to stand on. Putting it in an enclosure is even better.






  • Many providers have specific clauses for this. Ever since crypto mining became a thing providers have included in general terms you can’t over use the service. And often specifically against using it for crypto mining.

    Providers will normally warn users and only kick them off when no explanation is forthcoming.

    Usually this applies to shared services, like a VPS. You pay a lower price because you share hardware. But that only works if the hardware is shared fairly. If another user hogs all the resources, the service is no good for anyone. But it can also apply to seemingly dedicated services, like your own server for example. In that case the server is free to be used for whatever, but things like cooling and power are still shared. A regular dedicated server service will be based on typical use and can kick users out who require too much cooling or power. In cases where the resources are legitimately required, they will offer contracts that allow you to use all of the resources all of the time. But in turn you will have to pay a premium for something like that.

    On the surface it may seem like a bit of bullshit, but that’s often what allows prices to be as low as they are. So I’m fine with it, as long as it’s made clear beforehand (which in my experience it is)




  • Thermodynamics tells us it takes exactly as much to put the carbon back in as you got out of it by taking it out. So best case scenario we double the price of energy (which also means increasing the price of everything by a lot due to production costs increasing with higher energy costs) and capture as much carbon as we release.

    However this is the real world and in the real world processes aren’t 100% efficient. Even a hyper efficient combustion engine is only like 40% efficient in converting the stored energy into a usable form. Our carbon capture techniques suck hard at the moment, but say we improve the tech. That means in the real world we would need to increase energy costs by 4-6 times. Which probably means increasing the pricing of everything by a factor of 10.

    That shows just how unsustainable our current consume heavy economy actually is. And that is assuming we have a way of capturing carbon out of the atmosphere in a way that’s both efficient and long term. And do this in time before the processes we’ve set into motion spiral out of control.

    And like you say, it puts into perspective how big of a win not releasing the carbon is.
