Same. There’s a lot of options in open source software, and so I try different applications until I figure out which I like best. Then apt sorts out how to make it all work.

The real reason is it’s a pain in the ass to deploy software in Windows. It’s not like you can easily set up a server and put some packages on and have it just automatically apt update to that. Sure there’s some “Enterprise” servers you could set up (and pay license fees for) that might work somewhat like that, but it’s easier to just make it a web app and deploy to an internet webserver.

For product distribution, you need someone download an .exe, hope a virus scanner won’t block it, maybe pay microsoft to sign it or whatever, hope the user has a compatible version of windows, and maybe they can get some working software. But then you have to make some mechanism to handle updates and hopefully that doesn’t get blocked by some security software. So it’s easier to make your software a web application.

Also putting out windows native applications means you might not be able to enshittify it later since people could continue to use the old version forever. It’s weird to assume enshittification happens accidentally, but it’s actually what some companies want to do their software because $$$. They want applications they can enshitty later, they don’t make applications that may work on linux and whoopsie it just somehow got enshittified because of that… somehow.

But many times it’s just best solution. If an application doesn’t need access to anything on my system, I’d rather it be a web app. App does the thing I need, and when I’m done, I close the tab and we’re done. Why install more software on my system if I don’t need to?

Oddly enough it seems like Microsoft themselves that’s working towards breaking the network effect. They are pushing people to use the web versions of their software now and since edge is chromium, their web versions should work in Linux.

In the past Microsoft made most of their money from Windows and Office, but now they make more money off of cloud services so the traditional Windows and Office products are becoming more and more about just driving people to their cloud services. But as they they put more emphasis on cloud services they’re actually making it easier for people to dump Windows, and as they make Windows more about marketing their cloud services, they give people more incentive to dump Windows.

Just do what you can do to make things better for people. It’ll drive you crazy if you’re worrying about what other people are doing. Even crazier than that if you want a reward for doing things right. Do the right thing (even if no one else is) simply because it’s the right thing to do.

Yeah, if I’m not using the computer I turn it off because why would I be wasting electricity? So it’s the same for windows or linux to me. You do need to reboot your computer sometimes anyway. For linux it’s when you update the kernel. For windows you just have to reboot for similar reasons or after you’ve spent a bunch of time trying to figure out why something isn’t working and then in desperation “try turning it off and turning it back on again”. Better to just turn it off when you’re done using it and turn it on when you need it again and many of those issues are avoided completely.

So I turn off my computer when I’m not using it and I save power AND so the computer doesn’t get glitchy. It doesn’t take much time for the computer to boot up, so there’s not much reason to not just turn it off when I’m not using it.

A lot of cities were designed around cars. In Cities Skyline you can just bulldoze entire neighbourhoods and completely change the roads and transit. Unfortunately in real life you can’t easily bulldoze people’s homes, and transit networks can take a decade to build.

Global warming is a problem now, and perfect is the enemy of good enough. We know EVs aren’t the ideal solution, but it’s important part of a solution that involves improved transit, better quality of life in dense population centers AND EVs for neighbourhoods that were built in a car-centric past. Maybe in 100 years the suburbs won’t exist and there won’t be any need for cars, but if we wait 100 years to have perfectly designed transit friendly neighbourhoods we’ll all be fucked.

There are economic policies that have been done in the past to do this and they worked. Keynesian policies, taxing the wealthy, various housing plans. There was a housing shortage post WWII and it was solved. We know exactly how to solve this problem because we’ve solved this problem in the past.

Yeah this is more of a situation where because more applications are built for windows you’re more likely to encounter poor quality application level software on windows than on Linux. Especially if you stay within the walled garden that most distros provide.

People see a pattern with having a lot more problems with applications on windows than they do on linux and wrongly assume it’s because of the OS.

It’s really silly since there’s plenty of real bullshit going on with windows people could meme about. There’s no need to make up shit about windows being bad at something it actually does ok with.

Last flight I was on did a big ass loop. Kinda wanted to ask the pilot why he did that, but it was a longer than expected flight and I just wanted to go home. The weather was shit, so I’m guessing the airport was temporarily closed because of that. Probably the pilot knew the weather situation and took on extra fuel so he could just fly around for a while if the airport was temporarily closed.

So yeah, there’s a lot of little details that would make sense if you’re on the plane, but looks really weird if the only thing you’re looking at is a flight path.

Not sure if flying over Afghanistan is a better option than Iran tho. Betting on the Taliban (or the various groups they’re fighting against) don’t have the capability to shoot down airplanes I guess.
