Anarchism@lemmy.dbzer0.com•[Question] When have we as a human species started to create social hierarchies?
2·8 days agoAgriculture is only about 6000 years old,
Older than that.
A related notion is subsidiarity, the idea that social and political issues should be dealt with at the most immediate or local level most suitable for resolving these issues. Subsidiarity is a general principle of EU law, but has its roots in the teachings of Aquinas and his ideas about natural law.
I find it interesting how figures who are seemingly diametrically opposed, can still reach a similar conclusion when it comes to where power should reside; on the lowest level possible and practicable. Or how a pope, the leader of perhaps the most hierarchical organisation in human history, can sometimes agree with an anarchist.

11·9 days agoNo coincidence that some of the first joint-stock companies were the Dutch East India Company and the British East India Company. Capitalism helped fund colonialism.

15·9 days agoFun fact: the trade in Obsidian dates back at least 14,000 years. Some suggest there may have been obsidian trade networks dating back 700,000 years, but those may have been one off trades. Or human ancestors travelled to mine obsidian deposits in a concentrated manner. Source That would mean trade predates the human race.
Also, only last years researchers proved that significant amounts of the tin needed to make Bronze during the Bronze Agein what is now Greece, came from tin mines in Cornwall. Not enough tin locally. Source. This is why they’ll find really old beads, amber and the like where you’d least expect it. Trade network spanning from Cornwall to Afghanistan, dating back up to 5000 years if not more.

3·15 days agoOf course, coastal reactors are vulnerable in other ways. Climate change can exacerbate extreme weather events. It’s the annoying thing about lots of stuff, you only really find out what goes wrong, when it goes wrong.
Unknown unknowns, as some arsehole once put it.
Also, coal contains small amounts of uranium and thorium which gets concentrated in the fly ash. Fly ash which then gets spread across the area surrounding the power plants. So I’m certainly not saying nuclear is obsolete or particularly dangerous compared to alternatives like coal.

Anarchism@lemmy.dbzer0.com•[Discussion] Are you pro or anti nuclear energy? Why?
171·15 days agoMight I just add that nuclear isn’t exactly dealing with climate change and water shortages that well.
It’s something I never really thought about, but plenty of nuclear plants have faced climate related issues in recent years, and been forced to shutdown or reduce output.
Also, in an age of drone warfare, decentralised power production is potentially also a huge plus.
