Agreed. The hardware was essential in my journey. From a pi4b to a second hand mini pc to a small cluster with added cloud storage. I had to figure out a cheap and sturdy setup for reliant self hosting.

I’m running Home Assistant on mine at the moment. It’s amazing. Really. Apart from being an great smart home solution I’ve found it a good solution to create dashboards for life.

I have set up our family calendar, train schedules that change routes depending on the time. Waste collection notifications. It warns me to get a raincoat and umbrella in the morning. I get news headlines for my interests…

Before that I’ve tried a lot. It was my first step into home labbing 2 years ago. It brought me back to my youth. Breaking the family computer and trying to fix it before anyone noticing it.

I switched from the pi4b to a refurbished lenovo tiny m93p i5 with a 500 GB ssd (99 euros) and never looked back. Installed proxmox and now I have a versatile low power homelab.

Not as power efficient as a pi but 17 W at idle is pretty damned good for such a tiny powerhouse.

I’m using element and element x for over a year and it’s annoying that threads just won’t work on element x.

That is exactly why signal needed phone numbers. It’s an easy way too onboard and grow your user base.

When running containers it’s not uncommon to relocate just 512 mb for lighter processes.

I stared a year ago, from scratch. Fumbled around with a Raspberry for a few months and then bought a mini PC for 100 euros. (Lenovo tiny m73 with 8GB of RAM and a 500 GB ssd) That’s all you need.

Proxmox is a great way to go because it’s quite easy to create and delete virtual machines. You’ll be starting over quite a bit in the beginning.

I recommend documenting your stuff so you can easily start over. Claude.ai has been a great help for me to troubleshoot. AI is awesome to get the typos out of your config files.

I’m not convinced but I’m uneducated on the matter. It still feels like LLM since long can read around spelling mistakes or typos and effortlesly replaces wrong inputs.

Edit: I aporeciate the effort though. ;-)

I think LLM just replace the letters without issue. I can write a while text full of spelling mistakes and the response is as if they aren’t noticed.
