For real. Firefox should be positioning itself as the only real alternative to the vast Blink-based “It’s all just pallet swapped Chrome” ecosystem but every opportunity Google gives them to do that instead of actually positioning themselves as an alternative, they shoot themselves in the foot. It’s gotten bad enough that people who advocated for Firefox for years have thrown their hands up in the air, given up, and moved on to other browsers without any so much hope to be positioned as a real alternative like Waterfox and Servo. I don’t think it’s being talked about enough how Mozilla has squandered all of the good will they ever had when at one point it was advocates like us who pushed it to become the only real alternative to Microsoft Internet Explorer. We were able to overthrow a browser with just as much reach into market share as Google Chrome has now, but in order to do that we need an alternative browser that is actually factually an alternative. And Mozilla just isn’t giving us one at this point

this is a scratchpad note for myself that i’m figuring out a good place to talk about it here or on anarchist.nexus:

It’s important when dealing with propaganda and counterpropaganda to know what’s effective. The scale basically works like this:

1. the whole truth
2. the distorted truth (as in your facts are true but the framing you use distorts perception)
3. the incomplete truth (as in your facts are true, but the context you provide excludes important details that could shift someone’s perspective)
4. lies

The challenge is in running counter propaganda to these formats. the hardest propaganda to counter is, in order:

1. lies (people who believe the lies will view the truth as lies)
2. the whole truth
3. the distorted truth (some people will dismiss you rephrasing the published truth as you being a whiner)
4. the incomplete truth (providing the missing facts is a quick path to having people seeing the whole truth)

yeah the labor movement fell into a pattern of black and white thinking that made them easy to shatter after the Harlan Couty War. it all culminated in union workers needing to organize, and ultimately unionize, against their old unions. in large part that movement was why the political establishment reacted with Thatcher and Reagan

moving goalposts is their whole thing

just to build on this a little further, disillusioned people are more attracted to the familiar than something that requires more internal effort to change. in my observations many of the most adament ML/Stalinist adherents are more supportive of imperial structures with a liberatory aesthetic than they are of structures that are truly challenging to their named enemies. ML/Stalinist thought offers a form of resistance to capitalist structures that doesn’t require as much internal change than anarchism, zapatismo, or trotskyism.

what i find interesting though, and that i’m still examining, is that self reported MLs have a tendency to announce that ML/Stalinism/Maoism is the movement of the global south even though leftist movements in the global south tend to hew much more closely to anarchism and trotsyism with a little bit of maoism mixed in. i haven’t fully drawn a conclusion yet, but i think a form of confirmation bias is at play. they’ve divided in their heads the world into East vs West with East being the great global protector of South. they think themselves, as all people do, the good guys. so they look for things in the global south that confirms their perception that they’re the good guys rather than examining how leftist movements in the global south differ greatly from the ML model of vanguard revolution

this is an anarchist perspective on solarpunk, so please bear that in mind:

i don’t think solarpunk can ignore the needs of neurodivergeot people and claim to have dissolved all hierarchy. i think your question actually is a fantastic prompt for us to suss this out and figure out how to handle it. my experience has been that neurodivergent people do not avoid social connection, but instead typical modes of social connection. i think a lot of it will come down to neuronondivergent people (i dislike the term “neurotypical” as it’s often used by bigots as a label for themselves as a form of supremacy against neurodivergent people) being receptive. i’m AuDHD so my experience with this will be different from yours, but a lot of it has come down to discussing these things with my social connections and creating methods of discussing them with people who think differently from us.

so much of it comes down to recognizing that the current hegemony is inherently abilist. if we are to undo this hegemony, we have to find ways of living and being that are fundamentally opposed to this hegemony. we must also recognize that it falls more on the maintainers of the hegemony to adapt, and less so on the people who suffer under the hegemony. solarpunk must center LGBTQIA+, minority, immigrant, indigenous, and neurodivergent people and show a world where they thrive.
