The thing I learned when I had dishwasher issues was to always start with the manual. You’ll probably be surprised with how much info is in the manual.

The Samsung dishwasher I had issues with had 50+ pages worth of diagnostics and repair instructions, including detailed meanings for every unique error code that can occur, and instructions for putting the whole unit into a test mode, where you can force each motor to run independently, run test routines for sensors, etc. Gave me everything I could want for DIY repairs.

Can’t say it’s always this nice, of course, but this adivce has served me well for other appliances since.

My guess would be that it’s geard towards bugfixes. If a consumer discovers and fixes a bug in the original source, they’re obliged to push it back upstream, or at least publish it so others can. Vut they still get the freedom of MIT to add new closed-source features or work it into a larger-scale closed-source project.

I have two main conplaints about shorts, myself, the end result of which is that I prefer to just never see them in my feed, ever.

1. Most shorts that pop up for me are literally just clips from longer form videos I’ve already seen, or are already on my Watch Later list. And there’s SO damn many of them. Those types of shorts are purely clutter.

2. The other type of shorts I see most often are just aping the tiktok format, characterized by being extremely shallow and low-effort, as well as having the INFURIATING tendency to be over-edited for length trimming. You know the type of editing I mean, the one where the creator apparently thinks that even pausing to BREATHE between words or thoughts is too much downtime in the video. I find it insulting that TikTok and now YouTube have normalized the idea that creators should be so overwhelmingly desperate to capture every moment of your attention. Plus, it’s pretty well understood by now that feeding your attention that heavily is wildly unhealthy for your brain.

They are being forced to allow customer repair and maintenance. The settlement requires them to provide outside access to a variety of tools and software, for the next 10 years. Still insufficient, but that’s why it’s being called a landmark deal. Nothing quite this has happened before, that I’m aware of.

Only reasons I moved off of Mint was that it had minor issues with NVidia gaming performance, and I ended up liking KDE Plasma better than Cinnamon. Was plenty stable, otherwise.

Can’t really recommend bazzite, that I moved to, since there’s several issues that have proven unsolvable for me, due to the filesystem veing immutable.

Unfortunately, I don’t see Linux ever gaining widespread adoption. Not for general desktop use.

In order for that to happen, Linux would have to gain enough market share to actually be a threat to Microsoft’s business, and when that happens, Microsoft is going to respond one of two ways: actually making their products more appealing, and regain their lost share, or (far more likely) REALLY ramp up their efforts to suppress Linux’s growth. And I don’t think Linux has the strength to withstand the full weight of Microsoft’s legal and financial power.

This literally IS putting the responsibility on parents.

The law requires that part of “account setup” includes asking the user’s age bracket, and then allowing apps installed via “stores” to retrieve that value from the OS. The entire burden of trust in this implementation is placed on the owner of the hardware, exactly where it should be.

Don’t scare me like that, Phoronics. I thought you were talking about DRM = Digital Rights Management. That’s the last thing we need in the Linux kernel.

Not particularly, it’s just the default. And it’s not really about the PDFs, it happens when I’m trying to visit links, from outside of Firefox as well. Opening PDFs is just something I do far more often.

It’s definitely not just first open, for me. Every two weeks, I scan and organize receipts as PDFs for my own accounting, so I end up with many files open at once, all while my existing Firefox wibdows are already open.
