Selfhosted@lemmy.world•What to look for in building/buying a server?English
2·9 months agoI currently run a Dell Wyse 5something, that one’s low power but passively cooled. Total silence for Home assistant and related services.

11·9 months agoI had good results with SFF (Small Form Factor) machines, mostly Dell Optiplexes. More space inside while manageably small. Usually a lot of them around as former leasing machines.

Do you have your browser set to HTTPS-only by any chance?

Homelab@selfhosted.forum•old laptop and raspberry pi is my past - what should be the upgrade?English
2·10 months agoI’d suggest at least 3-2-1, if documents and photos and other personal data are involved (think *cloud) have a look at https://www.elovade.com/blog/die-3-2-1-1-0-backup-regel-der-neue-standard-fuer-datensicherheit/
Edit: not necessarily with their product (haven’t heard of them before), just as a basis.

Homelab@selfhosted.forum•old laptop and raspberry pi is my past - what should be the upgrade?English
2·10 months agoYeah, that’s fair. I currently run a Ryzen 5700g-based system with 32GB RAM, 3 SSDs for system, docker and additional docker storage, also 2x8TB HDD for media storage and backups. The whole thing “idles” at about 37 watts and currently handles Nextcloud, Opencloud, Immich and Jellyfin, along about 40 other smaller containers. Unless something’s really active, the machine is at about 5% load.
So as long as you don’t need to do too many things at the same time (initial Immich scan is a bitch), even a relatively low-powered system can get you a lot.
As the other commented mentioned, each spinning disk will add quite an additional baseload, 5W at least each.

2·10 months agoBut what do you want to do with the machine? More towards services, more towards storage? Because both RAM and storage are expensive at the moment and will rather get more expensive.
One option would be to buy used, e.g. a DDR4-based system. It’s still not going to be pretty.

Linux@lemmy.ml•Transferring data from Windows to Linux during migration
33·10 months agogiven the criticality of the stored data I would rather stay in Windows than risking data loss.
That’s what a solid backup strategy is there for. Which has nothing to do with the OS, so get into it.

Linux@lemmy.ml•Linux is awesome at home, but aren't y'all forced to use Windows at work?
2·10 months agoLinux is also awesome at work, if your workflow allows for it. Unfortunately, I cannot see the CAD/CAE world switching over (or rather bizarrely, back) to Linux anytime soon.
Seconded. Works really well for me.

I love the fact that (until now at least) they have everything as separate services, so “stock” opencloud only does file synching tasks. Works better for me than Nextcloud the last few years.
