Here is some feed back from my friend who is a social media user. I asked him if he found this appealing he said no because he wants less social media.

I think the landlord part is a huge slopulism redflag. landlords have nothing to do with a social media platform bringing up that there is 0 here is dumb

I think there should be a sell that isnt negative. The fediverse isnt good because its less shitty. Its good because its actually cool in a lot of unique ways. Those unique ways are hard to sell easily but in my opinion the sell should be something positively cool about the fediverse. Personally I like the instance concept I think its what makes this place so great. To my friends I just say its a shared feed not controlled by any one entitiy.

There is a no politics rule but I see plenty of anti right wing, critical of tech bro and capitalism posts. The posts getting flagged are generally pretty low effort garbage.

Hacker news has been a nice place to browse. Yes a lot of the people are the most AI silicon valley brained ghouls but its offset by the entertainment of seeing them earnestly say the quiet part out loud. and because the forum has rules about sincerity thoughtful engagement you can open a thread and actually read a good discussion with intelligent comments.

Ubuntu is fine. Mint is fine. If you have a newer device id pick ubuntu over mint. Its a matter of preference. If your next PC comes with ubuntu use that and see how you like it. If you dont try out mint, try out fedora KDE as well.

I don’t care. Linux is for everyone. That means Nazis like dhh, genocidal regimes like the CCP and Isreal. Taking the stance of I won’t support x project if they accept funding is logically inconsistent and would exclude me from supporting linux. We already use linux which is funded by fascists.

Judge your favourite projects if they start changing their CoC or community moderation or any action which suggests a shift in values. If you try to fight on the ground that accepting funding is a red line you’ll lose. They will choose money over fickle support(non monetary) from a purity testing community.

Im hoping that the 18m funds a lot of maintainers that otherwise wouldnt be able to work full time. I really don’t want to see it going to stupid meme ai projects but DHH is a moron so it will.

KDE looks modern, has features I didnt even know I wanted. Whatever I can think of wanting it’s either already there or I make a post on the fourm and its there in a month.

When I had an issue with an update removing something that I liked. I made a post and KDE devs added a toggle so I could keep the functionality I had before. Even though it was a minor thing they could have told me not to worry.

Another day another win for linux.

Also do you have any cool binds? For example I have a bind for switching my audio output from speakers to headphones, it’s so useful.

After the reddit migration there was a sense of optimism and feeling that this platform could be something great. People were joking and interacting positively.

Then the I/P happened and agenda posting went crazy you had people attacking people where both people were on the same side of the issue. Its gotten consistently worse since then. I/p, Ukraine, Trump, AI its making people miserable and rightfully so. But I wonder what is needed for the path back to optimism and positive discussion.

Block users that seem extreme and it will clear up. Its like 10 people responsible for 95% of the posts.
