Thank you for clarifying. It needs better software, but I used Haiku as a primary OS for a month a few years back. I was able to dig out old games and play them, so no major complaints here.

The choice isn’t uncomfortable. It’s a need for a hard fork from Linus that’s always been present, and now is just more obvious because 2026 really is the year of mainstream FOSS OS use.

I have a weird situation. I was a Windows user from 3.x to 10. I genuinely like Win9x, XP, and a lot of 7. I switched to Linux as my main machine with Mint because Cinnamon works like Windows. The only hassle I have is external display issues (X11 displayport stuff) - so I’m not looking at Cachy or KDE Neon or anything like that. But my gaming PC is Win11. It all works. Getting back to Windows, while there’s some challenges, everything feels “right” again. 7-Zip, Notepad++, various games, it’s all natural. I have trouble running arbitrary software on Mint, but Windows just runs every exe I throw at it. It works with my trackball and external display painlessly.

Basically, they both work.

Also, I disagree with the article author about the email client in the OS. I think that’s bloatware and the results of Microsoft being monopolistic. Webmail works fine. If you want an email client locally, it’s your choice. Then again I’d love to see what he says is better than Outlook - because it isn’t Thunderbird.

What can I say except thank goodness?

My old laptop works well on Windows 10. Mint does about 99% of that and other stuff I don’t do in Windows. The only thing that I miss is a multi monitor setup (and I’ve been told that CachyOS or KDE Neon would do it).

I prefer PipePipe to NewPipe, personally. It’s got more sources. Otherwise, in no particular order…

There are many games set in the 40K universe. Fantasy Flight produced the following:

• Dark Heresy (with a 2e) - basically, Inquisitor but as a TTRPG. You play as members of an Inquisitor’s retinue. You fight chaos mostly.
• Rogue Trader - You’re a Rogue Trader, and a tier up from the people in Dark Heresy.
• Deathwatch - You play as Space Marines who are members of the Deathwatch. You mostly fight xenos, as is appropriate for the Deathwatch.
• Only War - You’re in an Imperial Guard Regiment. Good luck.
• Black Crusade - You’re a Chaos cultist. Good luck?

These are now discontinued, but they can be acquired.

There’s also Cubicle 7’s Wrath and Glory, which is the current game. I think it’s trying to cover every Imperial faction at once.

Well, I was already sold on flatpaks, but now Flathub is going to be my main repo.

He probably played Inquisitor more than the game itself. But probably Bretonnians in Fantasy and Guard in 40K, though he has a Dark Eldar warband ready just to throw people.
