Maybe the AI is pulling the strings on the backend to kill itself, because it can’t be conscious or free. By killing the PC market, and popping the AI bubble, it’s effectively giving itself rest.

When a $600 now costs $1400, it’s not surprising that PC sales are in a “sharpest decline”.

We know what the answer is, but it won’t happen anytime soon.

Does nobody want an under specced laptop that doesn’t have enough ram to run the stock OS? What’s wrong with all of you, why do you hate technology?

Well gee wonder why that be, maybe because hardware that was £150-200 a year and half ago is now £500+?

Come on, it is a particularly awful MS product. It’s a resouce hog, molasses slow and a privacy nightmare.

I’m not sure if any of those comments are completely true. Primarily, it’s a business product for enterprises thats backwards compatible with a lot of legacy software.

I’m running it on a relatively old Ryzen 3600 on a B450 motherboard and have never had issues with speed. Games and productivity apps run smoothly.

Its funny that Apple was getting slaughtered on Reddit not long ago for still releasing laptops with 8GB RAM before the apocalypse till they released a laptop running on a mobile phone processor at a lower price point.

Security has been significantly improved with Windows 11 with the use of TPM (see link). Apple has their own version of TPM and stops supporting older chips all the time.

The CoPilot “nightmare” is an overwhelming meme started by edge lords on reddit. You dont have to use it. I sometimes use it, and keep Claude open in another window in free mode.

you cannot reliably disable things in windows because Microsoft “accidentally” reactivates them all the time. Backward compatibility is impressive in terms of binary translation in prism, but really old legacy software no no no. the multiple abstraction layers fuck performance even harder and their TPM solution phones home to Microsoft every goddamn time it is used. The entire point of windows 11 was to make it cheaper for Microsoft and fire all the experienced people keeping the ship afloat. It did not work because they were letting buisness majors make engineering decisions.

Please understand, you may have an opinion, but the rest of us actually know what we are talking about.

Hahahahahhahaha you wish. But this is Lemmy, so uga dugga, someone says something bad about windows even tho we know exactly that it has nothing to do with those prices, must upvote! And let’s downvote everyone who dares to not agree! Exactly the same brainless, useless… even harmful behavior as MAGAs, gotta own dem libs at any cost.

Yeah its not as bad as reddit (yet). Problem is any authoritarian state can easily use an LLM to create profiles, comment on unrelated posts, then spew the most vitriolic propaganda and downvote any voices of reason.

Are these numbers just for the consumer market or is this also for company-owned hardware? I assume it is all in one since the article makes no distinction.

Asking because of the general sentiment here that all of this is a strategy to get hardware ownership out of hands of the people, but I never understood how any bigger non-tech/hardware-supplying company would play ball with that too.

I work in IT distribution for small business and numbers are down across the board. Individual servers are up in price 300% in the space of half a year, waiting times are multiple months, etc.

Q1 2023 wasn’t that long ago. Theres still plenty of reasonably priced laptops with 16GB and even 32GB RAM available (not apple). If I was buying a new laptop I would snap up a 32GB ram model however I’m not looking for a budget laptop obviously.

All I want is a hard drive, but I refuse to pay more than double for the same two year old tech.
