It’s my guess, but our social cohesion meant that human mothers were protected and fed well in order to nurture their young. Thus more time for cerebral development.
It’s also that our brains are so freakishly huge, we have to be born way earlier in development than most other animals so our heads can squeeze through. And the head size is still causing issues.

That’s the obstetrical dilemma. But it seems like there’s a growing body of work pushing against that idea. Wikipedia has a a good overview.
