Microsoft has confirmed that Windows 10 users in the European Economic Area (EEA) will get one more year of free updates if they log in with a Microsoft account. This is a win worth celebrating. Our campaigning, writing and chanting forced one of the world’s tech giants to act. That’s no small feat and a clear sign that we have power!

But let’s be honest: this is just a 1-year snooze button.

Being forced to log in to a Microsoft account to get the year makes it not wortg celebrating at all. It is part of their long term plan to turn your OS into a SaaS platform that works for them instead of you.

I mean, it’s marginally better than having to pay or sign up to Backups or Rewards, but yeah, still not great.

they have 3 year options you can pay for.

but just install linux… also them depreciating software has nothing to do with right to repair… your hardware will still work, windows 10 will still work… just no security updates which has nothing to do with right to repair

Consumers can only get 1 year.

It’d be great to switch everyone to Linux, but ‘just install Linux’ doesn’t fly for a lot of people. I volunteer in a repair cafe and see it first hand, even if you’re there to do it with them
